Transformers are mainly used to change the voltage to provide different functions within an electrical system. The two types of transformers include power transformers and distribution transformers. Power transformers and distribution transformers have several different characteristics, the main difference depending on specific features such as the type of network used, installation location, and voltage capacity.

 

What is a power transformer?

Fundamentally, a power transformer performs the function of power transmission and reception purposes. Subsequently, the voltage ratio of a power transformer varies between 756 kV and 11 kV. Power transformers usually have a higher MVA rating than distribution transformers.

What is a distribution transformer?

Unlike power transformers, distribution transformers are used for circulation purposes. This predefined level is also known as the end-user safety level and is suitable for domestic consumer or industrial use. The voltage range of distribution transformers, although similar to that of power transformers, varies between 33kV and 430V.

 

Main differences between power transformers and distribution transformers

In short, a transformer installed at the end of a long high-voltage transmission line or at a receiving point is a power transformer (mostly a step-up transformer). On the other hand, distribution transformers (usually mounted on poles) are those installed near load terminals (cities and villages) to provide utilization voltage at the power-using terminals (mostly step-down).

 

Here are some other differences between power transformers and distribution transformers.

Power transformers are used in higher voltage transmission networks, while distribution transformers are used in lower voltage distribution networks.

Power transformers are available on the market in various ratings of 400 kV, 200 kV, 110 kV, 66 kV, 33 kV, and distribution transformers in 11 kV, 6.6 kV, 3.3 kV, 440 V, 230 volts.

Power transformers always operate at rated full load because the load fluctuates very little, but distribution transformers operate at less than full load because the load varies very much.

Power transformers are designed to have a maximum efficiency of 100% and the efficiency is simply calculated by the ratio of output power to input power, while the maximum efficiency of distribution transformers varies between 50 and 70% and is calculated by All Day Efficiency.

Power transformers are used in power generation and transmission stations, while distribution transformers are installed in distribution stations for industrial and domestic electricity use.

Compared to distribution transformers, power transformers are larger in size.

 

In power transformers, iron and copper losses occur throughout the day, while in distribution transformers, iron losses occur 24 hours a day, and copper losses depend on the load cycle.
