Difference Between Step-up And Step-down Transformer

Step-up transformers are also used to start electric motors, microwave ovens, X-ray machines, etc. Step-down transformers have a voltage turns ratio of 2:1. The voltage to turns ratio determines the magnitude of the voltage transformation from the primary to the secondary winding of the transformer.
Transformers, where the output (secondary) voltage is less than its input (primary) voltage, are called step-down transformers. The number of turns in the primary transformer is greater than the number of turns in the secondary transformer, i.e. T 2 < T 1. When you recall that power is equal to the voltage multiplied by current and realize that transformers cannot produce power, they can only convert it, the fact that voltage and current "step" in opposite directions (one up, the other down) makes perfect sense. Any device that produces more power than it absorbs violates the law of conservation of energy in physics, i.e. energy cannot be created or lost, it can only be transformed. The practical significance of this becomes even more apparent when considering alternatives: before the advent of efficient transformers, voltage/current level conversion could only be achieved through the use of motor/generator sets.
In such a machine, the motor was mechanically coupled to the generator, which was designed to produce the required levels of voltage and current at the speed of the motor. Although both motors and generators are quite efficient devices, using both in this way exacerbates their inefficiency, so that the overall efficiency is in the 90% or lower range.
In addition, since motor/generator sets obviously require moving parts, mechanical wear and balance are factors that affect service life and performance. On the other hand, transformers are able to convert AC voltage and current levels with very high efficiency, without the need for moving parts, making possible the widespread distribution and use of electricity that we take for granted.

In fairness, it should be noted that motor/generator sets are not necessarily obsolete by transformers for all applications. Although transformers are clearly superior to motor/generator sets in terms of AC voltage and current level conversion, they cannot convert one frequency of the AC supply to another, or (alone) convert DC to AC and vice versa. Electric motor/generator sets can do all of these things relatively simple, despite the limitations of efficiency and mechanical factors already described.
The motor/generator set also has the unique property of kinetic energy storage: i.e. if the power supply to the motor is temporarily interrupted for any reason, its angular momentum (the inertia of the rotating mass) will keep the generator rotating for a short period of time, thus isolating any load supplied by the generator from a 'fault' in the main power system.
