Why Are Substations Needed?

May. 06, 2021

The demand for electricity is currently growing rapidly and this can be met by power stations. There are various types of power stations, such as thermal, atomic and hydroelectric. Depending on the availability of the resources, substations will be built in different locations, but these locations may not be closer to the load centres. The actual power utilisation can be done by the load centres. It is therefore essential to transmit the power from the substation to the load centre location. This function, therefore, requires high and long transmission networks.

Power is generated fairly at low voltage levels; however, it is not expensive to supply power at high voltage levels. In order to maintain high and low voltage levels, a number of switching and transfer stations must be built between the generation location and the client. Usually, these two stations are called substations.

Substation

Designing substations

The voltage of the electricity available at the power towers is so high that it would burn up your entire system and damage your appliances if it were supplied to your home, so substations are built to reduce the power from the high voltage transmission system to supply electricity to homes, industries, companies and other places that need it at a lower level. Distribution lines perform the task of supplying electricity to various locations.

The local electrical companies have many substations at various checkpoints in the country in the areas they serve their customers. You will find many substations in and around the country. Sub-stations have many critical components that manage the step-down operation from high voltage power to low voltage power, and these components are at high risk of damage, so it is important that they are protected when designing the substation.

Substation design

The design of a substation consists of transformers, circuit switches, circuit breakers, transmitters and capacitors.

The transformer performs the task of gradually lowering the high voltage to a low voltage, which is suitable for sending through the distribution lines.

The current is controlled by circuit switches

In the event of some electrical surges, the circuit breakers handle the power interruptions and thus protect the system from damage.

Substation applications

Sub-stations are based on the application of substations and they are divided into different types: generation substations, indoor substations, outdoor substations, pole substations, switching substations, transmission substations and distribution substations. In rare cases, such as wind farm generation systems, multiple hydroelectric plants and thermal power plants a collector substation can be observed, which is used to transfer power from multiple turbines to a single transmission unit.

The importance of substations

Sub-stations should be designed in such a way that they always supply electricity to the consumers. Quality power delivery is the most important objective of a substation. The substation must be able to effectively reduce high voltage. Once the high voltage has been turned, the power from the substation will disperse. Thanks to the efficient work and design of the substation, the house becomes brighter.
